toni melillo’s voice is the key to his new cd, which has to be considered in a genre of its own: a particular colour/instrument with the absolute power to advise against any preconceived definition and to deter any attempt at tracking down its influences.
jazz, bossa, west coast and the new acoustic movement are what a first listening of ‘il mio giardino’ - toni melillo’s debut album - hints to. it is not by chance that a group of well-known international jazzmen such as riccardo fioravanti (who played with paolo fresu, tom harrell and toots thielemans), fausto beccalossi (al di meola and don byron) or marco ricci (lee konitz and billy cobham) decided to partecipate in the project of this very original milanese artist, contributing with tones and shades to a record which is timeless and apparently independent of any specific geographical area.
still - and here lies a pleasant paradox - this record talks about the earth, it tells of seeds and roots. the roots of the best songwriter tradition, but then also of all traditions focusing on primary and basic sounds.
as a matter of fact toni melillo, with his particular singing and playing style, is part of a wider group of songwriters who can develop a strong relationship between the sounds of their words and the meanings of the text, creating a musical flow which is at the same time binding and embracing, consoling and healing.
